Written Proficiency Test (WPT)
The Written Proficiency Test (WPT) is a 60 to 90 minute assessment that measures an individual’s writing ability in their target language. The test is administered in either written or computer format (this depends on the language department).
The WPT is graded according to the ACTFL proficiency guidelines.
The ACTFL WPT is a web-based, proctored, standardized, global assessment of functional writing ability in a language. It measures how well a person spontaneously writes in a language – as described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines for Writing - without access to language/grammar resources or editing tools. The WPT is not an achievement test, assessing a writer’s acquisition of specific aspects of course and/or curriculum content, nor is it tied to any specific method of instruction. Rather, it assesses writing proficiency in terms of the ability to write effectively and appropriately for real-life writing purposes. Responses are then rated by ACTFL-certified raters, who compare the writer's performance on specific writing tasks to the criteria as outlined on a proficiency rating scale such as the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.
In addition to ACTFL’s guidance on preparation, BYU adds these requirements:
- Arrive appropriately dressed in accordance with BYU’s dress and grooming standards.
- Get a good night’s sleep before your test.
- No-shows will be charged a $60 fee (charged to your Financial Account). This fee comes from the testing company not from BYU.

Format
Background Survey
The Background Survey is a questionnaire that elicits information about the test taker’s work, school, home, personal activities, and interests. The survey answers determine the pool of prompts from which the computer randomly selects topics for the writing tasks.
Self-Assessment
Test takers select the description they feel most accurately describes their writing ability in the target language. This determines the test form and the range of possible rating scores a test taker can receive.
Intro & Warm-up
This section contains directions, information on test-taking strategies, and a warm-up activity at the Novice level.
Prompts
The ACTFL WPT includes 4-5 prompts for written responses addressing practical, social, and professional topics encountered in informal and formal contexts. Each prompt contains 2-3 tasks.
Up to two weeks after your exam, you will receive:
- A level certificate
- A diagnostic grid
- A Credly badge
